Open Source Movement in the Real
World
(and it's implications on Software Business)
October 21, 2003
Open
Source movement has gained significant momentum over the last
few years. Using open source technologies, companies and governments
are cutting costs, gaining flexibility, and discovering powerful
new sources of business value. Success stories from leading
enterprises and eBusiness companies, like Amazon.com, E-Trade,
Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Verizon have lead a major
push for Open Source.
While Open Source movement provides powerful tools and flexibility
to software developers, it also brings with it the challenges
of complying with open source licensing, limited support options,
and issues related to co-existence of proprietary and open source
software.
The business model for building a profitable open source organization
is very different from proprietary software.
We are proud to have a very distinguished panel of speakers
to discuss this topic from a variety of perspectives. How to
develop a business care for open source software business? What
are the challenges and resources available for open source deployment,
especially when it co-exists with proprietary software? What
are the latest developments in the open source movement?
This will be the Orange County T-SIG's first event. Come participate
in the discussion as well. This promises to be a great event.
