Improving Software Quality (in the Real World)

May 22, 2003

As software development organizations, we are all facing the problem of increasing pressure to have fast development cycles on increasingly complex systems - and we are seeing issues with reliability, performance, scalability or agility in our software and databases. The signs are everywhere:

    • "We always seem to have one more bug and the schedule keeps slipping out."
    • "I'm worried how it will perform after we launch."
    • "We seem to have random issues with performance and random bugs. The software team can't quite figure out where the problem is."
Why is this? Well simply put, software development has long focused on creating functionality and had considerably less focus on processes and tools to help improve quality. Further, we have found over time that testing is simply not the answer to software quality, but is certainly the focus of most organizations today. What's the alternative?

This presentation brings together three great speakers that can help your software development organization better address this quality gap. They will discuss processes and technologies that every software organization should be looking at. This is NOT the typical "adopt CMM" kind of presentation. Instead, these talks will focus on real-world approaches that can help you tomorrow.

Oded Noy, Path co-founder and CTO
Oded began his professional software career while still a teenager and has gained extensive experience in transaction-intensive and Web-based communications systems during the ensuing 23 years. In the Israeli Air Force, where he served as a combat pilot, Noy also developed crisis management software and systems for human/computer interaction. He is the primary architect of PATH's ABM technology. His ongoing experience with mission-critical enterprises led to the development of P.A.M. and its unique market niche.

Adam Kolawa, Parasoft co-founder and CEO
Adam came to the United States from Poland in 1983 to pursue his Ph.D. In 1987, he and a group of fellow graduate students founded Parasoft to create value-added products that could significantly improve the software development process. His years of experience with various software development processes has resulted in his unique insight into the high-tech industry and the uncanny ability to successfully identify technology trends. As a result, he has orchestrated the development of several successful commercial software products to meet growing industry needs to improve software quality - often before the trends have been widely accepted. Kolawa has been granted eight patents for the technologies behind these innovative tools. Kolawa, co-author of Bulletproofing Web Applications (Hungry Minds 2001), has contributed to and written commentary pieces and technical articles for various leading publications such as Software Development, CIO Magazine and SD Times. Additionally he has presented on software quality, trends and development issues at various industry conferences. Kolawa holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the California Institute of Technology. In 2001, Kolawa was awarded the Los Angeles Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the software category.
