Guerrilla Marketing:
Structuring Strategic Partnerships and Corporate Investments

October 9, 2003

You have successfully developed disruptive products and have landed customers who are on the "leading edge". You now seek to partner with a major player who can bring you: A large and continuous stream of revenues and profits; High-level industry contacts and increase your company's awareness; synergistic platforms for new product development; and perhaps funding.
  • How do you: Begin the process without burning cash and wasting the time of your key executives? Determine the ideal partner characteristics? And who do you contact?

  • How do you: Qualify the potential partner? Manage your potential partner's organizational maize?

  • Now that you've found 'em, what are the next steps and how do you prepare for the first and subsequent meetings?

  • How do you quantify the effects of an exclusive deal and compute the approximate value of your company?

We are proud to have a very distinguished panel of speakers, all of which have "been there and done that" and who will discuss this topic from many perspectives.

Featured Panel

  • Gary Augusta, Vice President New Ventures/M&A, Fluor Corporation
  • Alex Polack, Management Consultant and former Founder/CEO of ATA Software
  • Sami Morcos, Chief of Finance for the Santa Ana District Office-Small Business Administration
  • Horacio Munoz, Business Development Officer of JD Factors
  • Terry E. Bibbens, Chairman and CEO, Bibbens & Associates

Moderator: Blaine Ornburg, Member, Tech Coast Angels

Panel and Moderator Bios

Gary Augusta brings three different perspectives to corporate alliances and partnerships. He was a Principal with A.T.Kearney, the management consulting arm of EDS where he worked corporate strategy and strategic alliance issues for many Fortune 500 clients including Fed Ex, Prudential and BellSouth. Mr. Augusta then got the "start up and roll up the sleeves" bug and became VP Business/Corporate Development at CustomerSat an eCRM start-up and developed alliances with Siebel, PeopleSoft and other CRM providers. Gary then moved to his current role at Fluor where he is involved with strategic acquisitions and investments within the technical professional services market.

Alex Polack "caught" an entrepreneurial bug in 1988 and formed ATA, Inc., a software tool company specializing in reporting, documentation, and information presentation technologies. The company sales model was built around strategic relationships with the majority of revenue coming from the OEM and re-distribution channels. These channels included companies such as Rational, HP, Computer Associates, DEC, Sun Microsystems, Sterling Software, I-Logix, and others. In December 2000 Mr. Polack sold ATA to one of his strategic partners, Telelogic AB, a Swedish developer of system and software tools. As VP of Development at Telelogic, Alex continued to work with partners to enhance the Telelogic message of "best in class tool offering". Since leaving Telelogic in March of this year, Alex has been active with Tech Coast Angels, mentoring startup software companies, and consulting on a number of US Air Force and NASA programs.

Blaine Ornburg co-founded and sold his first start-up to VISA International and his second start-up to FDC, where he became a member of the M&A team. As CFO, he lead CCC Information Services to an $80 Million IPO and founded and sold his third start-up to private investors. Blaine began his career at IBM and currently is a private investor and a member of Tech Coast Angels.

Terry E. Bibbens, Chairman and CEO, Bibbens & Associates.
Mr. Bibbens is currently in the process of forming Homeland Partners, a $100 million venture capital fund to invest in first round financing of innovative companies, with focus on advanced technologies (including SBIR programs) that fit the current defense, asymmetric warfare, intelligence and homeland defense markets.

He graduated from Stanford, with a BSEE in 1958, and participated in senior executive management programs at Stanford and the University of Santa Clara. He currently is on the board of directors of several small high-tech companies; the Small Business Technology Coalition; and is Chairman of the Board of the non-profit ACE-Net national small-cap listing service. He is co-authoring the "Entrepreneur's Handbook," a reference source for entrepreneurs going through the process of starting, growing and exiting small companies.
