Computing Security Issues: Is your business protected?

February 24, 2005

Remember the good old days when you could talk about worms and fishing and everyone thought you were discussing Rainbow Trout or Big-Mouth Bass?

Now when you talk about "the one that got away," it's often in reference to one of your company's most valuable assets-its data.

It's about "phising" now; not about "fishing. " Viruses don't just keep your employees home from work; they destroy your IT Network. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. Companies today face the paradox of making data completely accessible and completely secure.

· Denial of Service
· Identity theft
· Spyware

Terms that sound more like the plotline for CSI than problems for a CIO, but these are the issues keeping IT executives-and their managers-awake at night. It's a multi-billion dollar problem. And it's getting worse.

But help is on the way.

Join our panel of experts on February 24th to hear what's being done to help companies fight back against the growing threat to computer security. Learn about enhancements to the physical security of work spaces; what's being done to secure network traffic and database servers; tools and processes aimed at the prevention of incidents and intrusions; how companies are stopping intrusions and damage in real-time; and what you can do to detect, prevent and remove viruses before they become a problem.

Computer security has never been more of a challenge. Come hear what's being done to address the problem, and what you can do to make your own company more secure.

  • James Christiansen, Chief Information Security Officer of Experian North America
  • Debra Shatford, CEO of TRI-D Systems

Debra Shatford, CEO of TRI-D Systems
Debra Shatford has a successful record serving as Chief Executive for high-tech start-ups. At TRI-D Systems she is responsible for setting the vision and strategy for TRI-D's family of strong identity authentication products and services. TRI-D's first enterprise solution is currently in beta testing and a full market launch is planned for Q4 2005.

Prior to founding TRI-D Systems, Debra was a co-founder and CEO for an ecommerce company that pioneered "Pay for Placement" search. That company was profitable in two years and, in 1999, was acquired by NBC Internet, the 7th most visited web site at that time. Today, the pay-for-placement and local search features originated by Shatford are widely used by the some of the most recognizable Internet brands including Yahoo, Google, and MSN.

In this capacity, Ms. Shatford also negotiated strategic alliances with distribution partners and spearheaded the acquisition of AllBusiness.com in a stock transaction valued at $225 million.

In all, Shatford's 25 year career has included executive positions in marketing, sales, operations and finance. John Harbison, Managing Director, TechSpin
Before co-founding Tech-Spin, John served as CEO and turned around (then successfully sold) SilentRunner, a network\ security software start-up. SilentRunner won many awards including PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award for Event Monitoring and 2002 Best of Year in Networking Software, as well as Computerworld Honors 21st Century Award. Cumulative revenues exceeded $20 million to over 100 customers before the company was sold.

As president of Raytheon Commercial Ventures Inc. (RCVI) from 2001-2002, John led Raytheon's efforts to identify ideas for commercializing defense technology, screen and prioritize these opportunities, develop business plans, forge alliances with external financial partners and market/strategic partners and incubate companies leading to a liquidity event. Under his leadership, Raytheon spun out five companies where it contributed IP and people, accessing over $110 million in outside capital and retaining over $50 million in equity interests for Raytheon "post-money" in these companies; two companies realized full liquidity events. Prior to the formation of RCVI, Raytheon had experienced no successes in commercialization.

Harbison joined Raytheon after 20 years in consulting with BoozoAllen Hamilton, where he served as vice president specializing in strategic planning for technology intensive companies. He led the firm's Aerospace/Defense Practice, its Strategic Alliances functional practice, its Los Angeles office and at one point served as the youngest member of the board of directors and as chairman of the finance committee. His current activities at Tech-Spin leverage the skills base and expertise he developed over the years at Booz·Allen -- strategic assessments of market opportunities, alliances/technology commercialization, and defense technology understanding.

In 1998, he co-authored the book Smart Alliances: A Practical Guide to Repeatable Success, which since publication has been (and remains) the best selling book on alliances and acquisitions among over 250 titles on that subject. He has also authored eight Aerospace/Defense viewpoints, which have been widely read and quoted in Aviation Week, Defense News and other prominent publications. In March 2001, Aviation Week nominated Mr. Harbison and his team for their highest honor, the Aerospace Laurel Award. Harbison has authored articles and been quoted in over 40 publications, and has appeared on network news broadcasts on ABC, CNN, CNBC, CBS, PBS and Bloomberg. He has been a keynote speaker at such forums as AIA, EIA and the Conference Board.

Mr. Harbison received a BA cum laude in English from Harvard University, an MS in accounting from NYU Stern and a MBA from Harvard Business School with first year honors.
